Mod_perl is a module that can be installed on the Apache server for the more effective execution of Perl scripts on the server. The module provides an embedded Perl interpreter directly on the server, thus loading your Perl content faster. Mod_perl allows full access to the Apache HTTP server, so programmers can manage requests and change its configurations. This advantage isn’t offered by the Common Gateway Interface (CGI). However, already existing CGI scripts still work together with mod_perl, their performance is even optimized because the module can emulate a CGI environment.

Perl & The Apache Server

Perl is a dynamic programming language influenced mostly by C but also uses features from shell programming and languages like Lisp. Perl is sometimes used as one of the CGI scripts, for the easier parsing and management of files. However, Perl is suitable for a great variety of applications. It is a widely used tool for the creation of server-side applications and dynamic web content. Perl is often used with Apache and it is part of the open-source software bundle LAMP (LinuxApache Server, MySQL, and PHP/Perl/Python). The Apache server is the most widely used web server software. For these reasons, mod_perl is great for optimizing the performance of the Apache server. You just need affordable paid or free Perl hosting.

WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get and it’s a term often used for content and website editors that display the result of the changes while you’re still making them, so you can instantly see the result of your actions. The web WYSIWYG editor enables you to work with the visual elements of the page without necessarily writing any code. However, there might be a slight difference between the visualization and the final result, especially if you’re working on a project that’s going to be a printed product. Various types of WYSIWYG editors are used in desktop publishing as well. WYSIWYG for desktop includes programs we use every day like Word or Adobe Acrobat.

HTML WYSIWYG Web Editors

HTML WYSIWYG editors are often used for online publishing, the designing of websites (also called WYSIWYG website builders), and content editing. They are most popular among newbies and non-professional developers or writers, who simply want to get their content out without the need to acquire new skills. HTML WYSIWYG editors are perfect for this because they are easier to use and don’t require the writing of code. The expression WYSIWYG is most widely used by web editors. The HTML WYSIWYG editors are also frequently in the heart of the debate on how websites and web content should be created. Critics of the web WYSIWYG editor point out that many of the available editors based on that technology create bad or redundant code because the needed markup is generated automatically.

MIME is short for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It is a commonly used email an Internet standard. The MIME format allows the exchange of various types of data over the Internet via email or protocols like HTTP. The MIME file format was created to enable the attachment of a wide range of media files in emails. The MIME format defines the type and subtype of the files. The MIME mail type allows the sending of messages that contain text in other character encodings, not only ASCII and this allows the usage of non-English alphabets (for both message body and header). You can also use MIME mail messages to send images, audio, and video files, as well as applications and multipart data.

MIME File Type Uses

The MIME mail file can be displayed directly in the message (inline) or as an attachment. As mentioned, the MIME file type expanded beyond email and now it’s also used with the HTTP, SIP, and RTP protocols, helping web browsers to read various media files as well. The MIME file type is very flexible, as its name says – it is an extensible format, so new content types and values could be added. Common content types can be sorted into a few groups. For example, application types include ZIP files, RSS files, XML, SOAP, JavaScript files, and many others; audio types include all kinds of formats that you can use to send files. The MIME file types can be also message types, text types, image types, video types, model types (for 3D objects), and multipart types.

The Telnet protocol is a standard used on local area networks or on the Internet to provide users with access to a remote system via TCP/IP. The connection is via terminal (console) but has several disadvantages such as no encryption of the connection by default meaning that any data send or received via telnet protocol can be intercepted by a malicious user and also there are no authentication methods for most of the implementations used in the Telnet protocol. Telnet was developed back in 1969 so it was mainly used in private academic or government networks. Due to the fact that the Internet did not exist yet, those security holes didn’t matter back then. Today the use of the Telnet protocol is rare because the Secure Shell (SSH protocol) is a more reliable alternative.

Telnet/SSH Clients

If you have a VPS or semi-dedicated server then in order to access and administrate your server as root then you will need an SSH or Telnet client. We recommend PuTTY as it is free open-source SSH and Telnet client with many features and tools to help you customize your web server the way you want. If you are new to web hosting you may want to check our free web hosting plan to get started with creating your first website.

SSH protocol and its Purpose

The SSH protocol is an advanced networking protocol used for the encrypted transmission of data and a replacement of the Telnet protocol when a remote connection over the Internet is required. By using SSH you can remotely administrate any computer or server with SSH client installed on it and just like the Telnet it is done via console in text mode. However, this time all sent or received data, including passwords, are encrypted. The SSH protocol is also used for tunneling or port forwarding which means that it can be used as a VPN alternative. In this case, an unsecured TCP/IP connection is redirected to the SSH client that redirects the connection to the end client. The redirected connection is encrypted. SSH can also be combined with SFTP as an alternative of the regular FTP connection if you need to use an encrypted protocol to transfer FTP data to your web server.

HTML meta tags don’t change the way a web page looks, but give additional information (metadata) about the page and the website as a whole. They show what the page is about, who is the author of the page, what is the page title, what type of content is on that page, which protocol the browser should use to retrieve the page content, and more. The HTML tags are important for search engines because they point out what the page is about and which keywords are relevant to the website. The meta XHTML or HTML tags must be placed in the header section of the web page. The length of the meta tag descriptions and titles is also important, they shouldn’t be too long (the recommendation is for no more than 66 characters in the title and less than 156 in the description of the page). The HTML meta tag or element has various attributes. Some of them are mandatory, some of them aren’t, but are still important for your site and some of the HTML meta tag attributes are suitable only in certain cases.

HTML Tag Attributes

The “description” tag attribute is especially important because it provides something like a summary for the web page. The meta description is also often used by search engines as a snippet in the search results. The “title” tag is not strictly a meta tag, but it should be included in the page because it defines the title of your web page, which is displayed in browsers’ tabs and in search results as well. The “keywords” tag attribute, which contains the targeted keywords for the page, is gradually losing its importance for search engines, especially Google. You’d better pay more attention to the meta description. The “HTTP-Equiv” meta tag specifies the type of content on the page and the used character set. It’s mandatory. A useful (but not obligatory) meta tag attribute is “robots”, which is recognized by search engines. It can be used to prevent search engines from indexing the page, crawling the links in it, using snippets in search results, etc. However, a more reliable and widely used method for preventing a page to be indexed is the robots.txt file.

The plug-in is a software package or module that provides additional features of all kinds for a bigger software program. Plug-ins add specific features to the software, making it more flexible and easily customized. Software applications also support plug-ins in order to allow third parties to develop modules that extend their capabilities and to facilitate the implementation of new features with no increase to the size of the software. A plug-in won’t usually work on its own, because it depends on the application software that is its host. On the other hand, the host application runs on its own and it doesn’t have to be changed if plug-ins are removed or modified. Plug-ins are used to enhance various kinds of software, they are often added in browsers, content management systems (some of the most looked for add-ons are WordPress plug-ins) and other web applications. Desktop software also uses plug-ins that enable the support for more file formats, specialized features, and commands (Adobe Photoshop, media players, Microsoft Office, etc).

Browser Plug-in & Other Uses, Plug-in Downloads

Plug-ins are easy to find and implement. For example, you can download any Joomla or WordPress plug-in. There are thousands of free WordPress plug-ins that enable all kinds of additional features for the CMS: forums, players, scripts, galleries, special visual elements, and many more useful features. You just need to download the plug-in and enable it in the plug-ins section of the CMS. Browser plug-ins are often used to enable the browser to read various types of content including video, animations, audio and more. Frequently used browser plug-ins of this type are Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Silverlight, Real Player, QuickTime, etc. You can download plug-ins for your browser just as easily. Depending on what kind of browser you are using, you need to download the plug-ins designed especially for it. Typically, you can download plug-in install package and manage it from the browser homepage and menu. You can automatically add new plug-ins, block or disable old ones.

Linux is a Unix-like OS that can be used on almost every type of computer hardware. At first, the term “Linux” was used only for the Linux kernel (which was developed first), not the operating system, but now it is commonly used to refer to all Linux-based systems. The Linux kernel is the core of the Linux software, but it can be combined with many different components that define the various Linux distributions. The Linux kernel was introduced for the first time in 1991. From the very beginning of the Linux development, the Linux software was meant to be free an open-source. So, now it can be freely used, distributed and modified. The Linux kernel is used in all types of Linux-based operating systems for all kinds of hardware. Linux OS is the predominant software for web servers, Linux is also implemented in supercomputers, tablets, and smartphones (Android is Linux-based). Linux has various distributions for personal computers like Ubuntu, Mint, Linspire, Xandros, OpenSUSE or gOS.

Linux Server Applications

Linux is most commonly used in server hardware. Linux is an essential part of the popular LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl or PHP or Python) software bundle used for the management of web servers. All reliable and experienced web hosting companies offer Linux servers to their clients. Linux is very secure and reliable choice for web server platforms. Apache is one of the most widely used applications for Linux servers that supports more than 100 million sites.

A way to define pixel (which comes from “picture element”) is – the basic unit of programmable color on an LCD display or in a digital image. It can be described as a logical – rather than a physical – unit. The physical size of a pixel depends on how you’ve set the resolution for the display screen. If a screen is set to its maximum resolution, the physical size of one pixel will be the same as the physical size of a dot of the display. If the resolution is set to a value less than the maximum resolution, a pixel will be bigger than the physical size of the screen’s dot (basically, a pixel will use more than one dot). The color of each pixel is a combination of three components of three colors – RGB (red, green and blue). Three bytes of data at most are allocated for each major color component that can define a pixel. A true-color or 24-bit color system uses all three bytes.

Mega Pixel and Pixel Pitch

Usually, the term megapixel (MP or Mpx) accounts for how many pixels there are in a digital image. It can also be used to quantify how many elements a digital camera has in its image sensor. One Mega Pixel equals 1 million pixels. For example, a digital camera that outputs 2048 by 1536 pixel image has 3.2 megapixels. In general, the higher the number of megapixels a camera has, the better the quality when printing an image will be. A very important factor that can define pixel density and quality of digital screens is the pixel pitch. Pixel pitch is the smallest physical element of a picture. A monitor with a smaller pixel pitch can display a more miniature element. Hence, the smaller the display elements, the sharper the picture will be on the monitor. The Pixel pitch of a screen is measured in millimeters (mm). The pixel pitch on desktop computer monitors shouldn’t be higher than 0.28 mm. If it’s any higher the monitor may not display a very sharp image.

A kilobyte is a measurement unit for digital information. When we need to determine the total size of the data storage on a hard drive then 1 kilobyte is equal to 1000 bytes. When it comes to measuring random access memory (RAM) capacity then 1 kilobyte is equal to 1024 bytes. Kilobyte is suitable for measuring the size mainly on some documents, or worksheets or web pages or smaller images. Otherwise larger measurement units such as megabyte (1MB = 1024KB) and a gigabyte (1GB = 1 048 576) should be used to define the size of larger files or larger storage units.

Kilobyte Definition, Confusion, and Application

Sometimes depending on the operating system a uses install on his computer it is possible for some confusions to occur. For example – if there is a file with a size of 65 563 bytes a MAC OS X would recognize the file’s size as 66KB because the operating system is rounding the value to the nearest 1000. On the other hand, Microsoft Windows would do a dividing by 1024 and show the file size as 64KB. Things can get even trickier when it comes to purchasing hard disk drives. If you buy a hard drive with 500GB size this will mean that it contains 500 000 000 kilobytes, instead of 524 288 000KB. This is why Microsoft Windows will detect the total volume after formatting to be around 470 gigabytes. That is why the use of kilobyte is more suitable for smaller flies where the difference between the two values will be negligible.

A hyperlink is a part of hypertext that redirects to a piece of data, such as a document or a Web page. The hyperlink could be a word, phrase, or image that is clickable and refers to a new document or a different part in the same document. Hyperlinks are used in almost all websites, allowing users to navigate their way from page to page. Usually, the text hyperlinks are blue and underlined, but this can be modified via CSS. When you hover the mouse cursor over a hyperlink the arrow should change to a small hand pointing at the link. When you click on it, a new document or a position in the current page will open. Hyperlinks, most commonly called just “links,” are mainly used in Web pages, but can be applied to other hypertext documents. These include certain encyclopedias, glossaries, dictionaries, and other references that use hyperlinks. The links act the same way as they do on the Web, allowing the user to jump from page to page. Basically, what is a hyperlink? A way for users to browse information conveniently and quickly.

Hyperlink HTML Code

The creator of the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee appreciated the advantages of using hyperlinks to refer any information to any other data over the Internet. Hyperlinks became a vital part of the creation of the World Wide Web. Web pages are written in the hypertext mark-up language HTML. Links are specified in HTML using the “< a >” (anchor) elements. To see the HTML used to create a page, most browsers offer a “view page source” option. Included in the HTML code will be an expression in the form symbol “<a” and=”” the=”” reference=”” “href=”URL”>” marking the start of an anchor, followed by the highlighted text and the “< /a >” symbol, which indicates the end of the source anchor. The < a > element can also be used to indicate the target of a Hyperlink HTML Code. A Hyperlink HTML code coming from one domain to another is defined as outbound from its source anchor and inbound to its target. The most common destination anchor is a URL used in the World Wide Web. This can refer to a document, e.g. a webpage, or another resource, or to a position in a webpage. The latter is achieved by means of a Hyperlink HTML Code element with a “name” or “id” attribute at that position of the HTML document.</a”>
